Man arrested, accused of raping woman while his children waited in the car

10:05 PM CDT on Friday, May 22, 2009

By STEVE THOMPSON / The Dallas Morning News
stevethompson@dallasnews.com

The woman was waiting at a Pleasant Grove bus stop when the rapist pulled up in a Buick Riviera, Dallas police say. He pointed a gun at her and ordered her inside.

She noticed two young boys in the back seat. They called her attacker "Daddy," the woman told police.

She asked him: Are you really going to do this with your kids in the car? He told her to shut up and do as she was told.

The man took her to a vacant house and raped her while his sons waited in the car, police say.

Days later, the same man pulled alongside another woman in his Buick, police say. The woman – who was eight months pregnant – noticed a Bible on his dash and one boy in the back seat. The man tried to rape her, but she escaped.

"I was not going to let him hurt me, and if he was, I was going have some type of evidence," the second woman said Friday. "If I scratched him, his DNA would be up under my nails. He wasn't just going to get away with it."

Police arrested 24-year-old Quinton Travoitz Young on Thursday, accusing him of the attacks. He was being held Friday in the Dallas County Jail on $225,000 bail and faces charges of aggravated sexual assault and attempted aggravated sexual assault.

Young did not immediately respond to an interview request Friday.

The first assault, on May 14, began about 10 a.m. along the 2400 block of South Buckner Blvd. The 20-year-old woman later told police she noticed the name "Gwendolyn" tattooed in cursive on her attacker's neck.

She said he drove her to a vacant home in Buckner Terrace, left his kids in the car, and marched her inside with a gun to the back of her head. Then he raped her.

The second attack began about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday as a 22-year-old pregnant woman was walking along North St. Augustine Drive, on her way to a dental office to get her teeth cleaned. A man came up from behind and flashed a small knife.

"I just turned around and did what he told me," the woman told The Dallas Morning News on Friday.

He ordered her into a Buick Riviera, where there was a young boy asleep in the back seat. In addition to noticing the Bible on the dashboard, she also saw a name tattooed in cursive on the right side of his neck, she told police.

He drove to a different vacant house nearby and ordered her inside. He left the boy, who had woken up, in the car.

"He left the windows up, and he cracked the passenger's side, I guess so he [the boy] could breathe," the woman said. "But as hot as it was that day, I know he was hot and about to pass out."

The man forced her inside the home through a back door.

"He pulled out the condom ... and I guess he put it on; I wasn't quite sure because I was busy focusing on a way to get away from him," the woman said. "He came up to me and tried to pull down my clothes, and I just was not going to let him do it that easy."

As she began to struggle, he grabbed her purse and fled. She chased after him.

"That's how I had got the license plate number," said the woman, who is due to give birth next month. "I was running like a little distance behind him."

The woman flagged down a passerby and borrowed her cell phone to call 911.

On Thursday about 11 a.m., an officer spotted the Buick headed north along Kingsford Avenue in Pleasant Grove. Police pulled the car over and arrested Young, whose criminal history in Dallas County includes only a misdemeanor theft arrest in 2003.

His two sons, who a police report says appeared to be about 4 and 5, were in the back seat. There was a Bible on the dashboard, and the name "Gwendolyn" was tattooed in cursive on his neck.

Officers released the boys to Young's mother; her first name is Gwendolyn.

OLATHE — The wording of state laws punishing animal cruelty could lead to a lighter sentence for a Shawnee man accused of torturing his girlfriend's dog.

Christopher Tann is charged with felony animal cruelty for kicking and stomping Blitz, his girlfriend's Lhasa Apso. The alleged attack last November broke 11 of the dog's ribs.

Johnson County District Judge Sara Welch ruled yesterday that the state's 3-year-old felony law is worded too closely to the state misdemeanor law.

That means that even if Tann is convicted, he would face the misdemeanor penalty instead of that for a felony.

The misdemeanor sentence is up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. The felony sentence is up to a year with a requirement to serve at least 30 days, a $5,000 fine and required anger counseling.

CHILD CUSTODY EVALUATORS TO JUSTIFY THE REASON FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL EXISTENCE: Child Custody Evaluation Articles- (Court Whores)

http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/122407918/abstract
RESPONDING TO THE CALL FOR CHILD CUSTODY EVALUATORS TO JUSTIFY THE REASON FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL EXISTENCE: SOME THOUGHTS ON KELLY AND RAMSEY (2009)
William G. Austin
ABSTRACT
Kelly and Ramsey (2009) propose that it is time to examine the costs and benefits courts and participants derive from child custody evaluations. A structure for a research program was suggested. This article endorses this call for such an examination on the system that provides for forensic mental health evaluations for custody disputes. There is a need to examine the costs and benefits of various types of approaches that are emerging, including the comprehensive evaluation and brief, focused evaluations. This article suggests that there is a need for forensic quality control of the work product that is produced by evaluators. Courts are cognizant of the need to encourage settlement between parties, but they also need to be accurate in making judicial determinations that will be in the best interests of children. Quality evaluations are a cornerstone in working toward this goal. Kelly and Ramsey are mindful of the need for evaluations to facilitate settlement, but also to get it right for the court on accurate predictions about children's developmental outcomes.

By: Amy Passalugo

The Henrietta foster father convicted of sodomizing and sexually abusing his foster daughter appeared in court for a re-sentencing Wednesday.

File photo

Lawrence Bright was re-sentenced to four-and two-thirds years to 14 years in state prison for rape, sex abuse and sodomy.

Boy found hanging from tree

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - State and county authorities are investigating the Memorial Day death of an 8-year-old foster child found hanging from a tree.

Rutherford County Sheriff's Sgt. Dan Goodwin said David "Charlie" Cotten was fishing with his two brothers, ages 7 and 10, and their foster father, reserve deputy Kam Sandstrom, as well as deputy Edwin Fitzgerald and his two sons.

Sandstrom told investigators Cotten accidentally struck another boy with his fishing pole and was told to stop fishing for a while.

When he hadn't returned after 15 minutes, Sandstrom called out to the boy, who answered he was OK. When the child hadn't returned after another 15 minutes, Sandstrom said he sent two children to look for his foster son but they couldn't find him.

About that time, the boy's foster grandfather, Sid Sandstrom, arrived at the fishing site and saw the boy hanging from a tree by baling twine.

"Sid ran over to Charlie grabbing him around the waist to remove the baling twine and lifting him up while his wife yelled for Kam to come help," according to a report by deputy Mark Mack.

An ambulance was called and paramedics tried to revive the boy. He was pronounced dead at Middle Tennessee Medical Center about an hour after he arrived, officials said.

The state Department of Children's Services is investigating. The two other foster children have been removed from the home "in an abundance of caution," spokesman Rob Johnson said.

A Sandstrom family member told The Daily News Journal they had been told not to comment.

Reserve deputies are unpaid volunteers who assist at large public events and sometimes ride along with certified deputies, the sheriff's department said.

More details as they develop online and in Thursday's News Sentinel.
